Ask and You Shall Receive

On Sunday April 19, 2020, I participated in the biggest Zoom call of my life. With just shy of 1000 registrants and 400 live participants, I didn’t think that I could still get nervous talking in front of such a large audience from the comfort of my bedroom.

On a sliding scale basis, people from all across the nation graciously donated their money and their time to support the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe in the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic while the feds attempt to take our lands out of trust status. The webinar called Standing in Solidarity with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe was in collaboration with the Dream Warriors Team, a Native artist collective and three other Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal members. Participants learned about the history of the tribe and the legal timeline up until the March 27th DOI Disestablishment decision and how to take collective action. The dream warriors offered musical intermissions and a writing exercise with powerful messaging about what home means to all of us. We also gave an on-the-ground snapshot of how the COVID-19 crises is directly affecting Tribal members.

Through the funding generated from this amazing webinar, the Dream warriors donated $6,000 to Heron-Hill LLC to go directly to citizens of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. YAYY! A vulnerable population that I am passionate about and often overlooked in times like these are the pregnant mamas and families with small children. As a student midwife and mother of 3 under 3- I can definitely relate to the struggle. Diapers, wipes, food, toys, snacks, childcare, toilet paper, clothes, growing belly, doctor visits, coffee, chocolate, gas, Netflix subscriptions, no job, trying to stay optimistic, stressed, insomnia, anxiety, more snacks..... and the list goes on. Life with small children is so rewarding but definitely not easy.

So here is my gift to you.

I am offering 30 small grants of $200 to Pregnant women and families with children under 4. No double dipping and one grant per family. It’s not much but it’s better than nothin’. All you have to do is:

1. Be an enrolled Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Member;

2. Be pregnant, and/or;

3. Have a family with child(ren) under 4 years old (ages 0-3);

4. Upload a video on Facebook or Instagram answering this question: “What does Mashpee mean to you?”

5. Tag me in your video on Facebook @Danielle Hill or Instagram @Heron_Hill

The grant opens today April 29th and closes Friday May 8th at 10pm. I want to move the money as soon as possible, so spread the word. All money will be distributed through paypal on Friday May 8th by midnight, so make sure you set up an account.

This is made possible first and foremost by the spirits and the ancestors who I prayed to for help- and they answered! Also thanking Lyla June Johnston and the Dream Warrior Team, Talia Landry, Nelson Andrews and Hartman Deetz.
